Tony Frugier

Tony Frugier

Regional Biobank Manager

Tony is a molecular biologist and neuroscientist by training. He holds a Master’s degree in developmental biology and a PhD in molecular neurogenetics from The University of Paris, France. He has over 20 years of experience in biomedical research and public health in France, Australia and New Zealand. Tony has also significant experience in international development and aid through mentorship, capacity building and projects management in Malawi, South Africa, Papua New Guinea and New Caledonia. Tony has years of experience in tissue banking and he was the manager of the Neurotrauma Tissue Bank at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne. Tony has a special interest in the development, implementation and streamlining of processes and standard operating procedures. He is primarily responsible for the overall operation the Auckland Regional Biobank.

Chair Scientific Advisory Board

Cris graduated in Medicine in 1989 then completed PhD in the University of Auckland. After a four-year postdoctoral fellowship in Melbourne, Cris spent six years in Cambridge University, UK, where he was a Fellow of St Edmunds College. While there he co-founded a bioinformatics biotechnology company that became listed on the Tokyo stock exchange in 2007. He leads a cross-disciplinary research team of clinicians, biologists and data scientists who use genomics bioinformatics to better understand human disease, especially cancer. Cris sits on the Board of Directors of the NZ Institute of Environmental Science and Research and is Vice President of the Auckland Branch of the Royal Society of NZ. He leads the Genomics Into Medicine Strategic Research Initiative in Auckland and Chairs the Auckland Regional Biobank Scientific Advisory Board.

Peter Browett

Peter Browett

Clinical Director

Peter is a consultant haematologist at Auckland City Hospital and Professor of Pathology in the Department of Molecular Medicine and Pathology, Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, University of Auckland. He is a graduate of the University of Otago Medical School, and after postgraduate training in clinical and laboratory haematology in Auckland, he was a Wellcome – HRC research fellow in the Department of Haematology, Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine, London. Peter is involved in several co-operative group and investigator initiated studies in blood disorders and stem cell transplantation. He is co-director of the Leukaemia and Blood Cancer Research Unit, with interests in blood cancer genomics, biomarkers in leukaemia, and the monitoring of measurable residual disease. Peter is Clinical director of the Auckland Regional Biobank, and Grafton Clinical Genomics.

Biobank Technician

Alice has a bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science from Auckland University of Technology. She manages the tracking, timing and facilitation of collections for all collection pathways within the ARB and is the database super-user where her skill is utilised by all sites across the ARB. Alice has a special interest in rare diseases which complements her planning role well.

Biobank Technician

David holds a Bachelor’s degree of Medical Laboratory Science from the University of Otago and is currently undertaking Master in Health Science study at the University of Auckland. He has special interest in endometrial cancer genomics and is primarily responsible for the Gynaecology Oncology collection, ARB official website maintainance, and electronic consenting project within the Auckland Regional Biobank.

Biobank Technician

Celestine holds a masters in biomedical science from The University of Auckland and is a member of the ARB technical team based at the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences. She is responsible for the daily operation of the ARB-Faculty of Medical & Health Sciences laboratory in regards to stock, consumables, maintenance and ordering, and the development and implementation of standard operating procedures in conjunction with the ARB manager. Celestine has a special interest in quality, compliance and laboratory practice.

Prem Sharma

Biobank Technician

Prem holds a Bachelor’s degree in Analytical methods in Chemistry and Biochemistry and has over 15 years of lab experience including Research and Development lab at Glaxo (UK) and diagnostics at Quest diagnostics (UK). Prem has a particular interest in biobank operations and quality. She is responsible for collections and daily operation at Matika Kiora – the Middlemore Biobank site of the ARB.
